It is He
1 John 1:1
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life.
In
the
beginning
The phrase “That which was from the beginning” highlights the pre-existence of Christ. Similar to other verses such as the opening of creation John 1:1, which states, “In the beginning was the Word,” this suggests that Jesus is not just a historical figure; rather, He existed eternally with God prior to the creation of the world.
“which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes”: The disciples were privileged to be auditory and visual witnesses of Jesus Christ. They were eyewitnesses to His teachings, life, miracles, interactions, suffering, and resurrection. This counters any notion that He was merely a myth or a spiritual abstraction.
“which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, of the Word of life”: This intensifies the idea of seeing, implying a careful and attentive gazing– a deliberate observation, suggesting a deeper engagement with Jesus, not just a fleeting glance. Jesus was human and so there were physical encounters with Him. The phrase “Word of life” is a title for Jesus which identifies Him as the very source and embodiment of eternal life. The fact that they could touch Him underscores His physical reality.
Jesus Christ is real and closer to you than you can imagine. The key takeaway from this verse is that Jesus Christ may not be with us physically as He was with the apostles but their witnessing makes it possible for us to experience the same things they had with him; He is the Word of Life for us too. Make good use of this privilege.
Prayer For Today:
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for today’s profound truth. We praise You for sending Your Son, the Word of life, into the world. Lord Jesus, we acknowledge You as the One who was from the beginning, the very source of life. We pray for a deeper understanding of Your pre-existence and Your eternal nature. Help us to grasp the reality of You truly becoming flesh and dwelling among us. May the witness of the apostles and others who encountered You strengthen our conviction and deepen our love for You. Help us to not only hear about You but to truly see You through the eyes of faith. May we be transformed and have a deeper fellowship with You and with one another. Thank You, Lord Jesus in your holy name we pray, Amen.
